2026 MoneyBadger Report

South Africans are not just trading crypto. They are spending it: on groceries and fuel, in amounts under R200, on any given day.

This report, released in August 2026, measures completed payments on our network across South African merchants, to show what people buy, where they shop and how they pay.

What began in 2023 as Bitcoin payments at a major national retailer is now a mix of Bitcoin and stablecoins across the wider economy, on-line and in-store. In the first half of 2026, payments across the network grew 95% on the same period last year, and the rand value spent grew 176%.
